Types of Modeling

There are many different types of modeling and not all of them involve being in front of a camera or on a runway. Very few people can do ALL of these types of modeling. Many categories have very specific physical or skill requirements. Be realistic when setting your goals.

Fit models are hired to help designers see how their clothing looks and moves on a person. Some companies hire fit models on a more permanent basis. Fit models are the least seen and often best paid models in the business.

Commercial print modeling is generally done to advertise products, services, and companies. There is no set height or weight for commercial modeling, but you must be a well proportioned, attractive, and be able to play different characters.

CASUAL/LIFESTYLES: A model portrays a certain lifestyle, like a college student in an ad for dorm room accessories or a senior citizen couple in a healthcare ad. Lifestyles models are generally attractive versions of a stereotype.

CORPORATE: Print modeling with a business theme. Corporate models portray doctors, nurses, executives, and other business people in brochures, ads, and annual reports.

SWIMWEAR: Swimwear models are generally curvier than fashion models with toned, but not overly muscular figures. Swimwear models can appear in advertisements for beach or resort locations and swimwear catalogs.

FITNESS: Fitness modeling requires a well-toned figure and often a degree of athletic proficiency. Fitness models appear in ads for health and fitness products, athletic companies, and trade magazines such as Runner’s World or Shape.

LINGERIE: This can range from a catalog lingerie situation where the girl is wearing a simple bra and panty set and smiling at the camera (JC Penney, Macy’s) to a scene where the mood is more mature in nature (Victoria’s Secret, Maxim).

GLAMOUR: Modeling with a playful sexual overtone. Glamour modeling can include lingerie and swimwear. Glamour models normally have curvy figures and beautiful faces.

ALTERNATIVE: Any modeling that has a punk or gothic feel.

NUDEGlamour Nude: Playboy and pin-up calendar style modeling.

ARTISTIC NUDE: Posing nude for an artist for the purposes of creating art.

EROTIC NUDE: Nude modeling that is artistic yet sexual in theme. Not pornographic.


HAIR: Hair models have gorgeous healthy hair. They are used for hair product ads and to show different hairstyles in hair magazines or at hair shows.

LEGS: Leg models have long shapely legs. They may be used in ad for pantyhose or footwear.

HANDS: Hand models have long graceful hands and impeccable nails. They are used in jewelry ads or any advertisements that requires a pair of photogenic hands.

Promotional or trade show models are hired to provide information to consumers about the product or brand that they are representing. Promo Models can make money by working at music concerts, sporting events, trade shows, and more.

Looks: Your looks matter a lot when you are in the modeling profession, but it plays a vital role in promo modeling. You should be attractive and fit. You are the face of the company and should strive to leave a positive, lasting impact on consumers and clients.

Communication skills: Trade show models have to interact with customers directly, which means that strong communication skills are vital. You should be able to inform them about the company’s product and services. You should make short and informative conversation with the people that you interact with. You have to deliver a live experience that reflects on the product or brand that you are representing. You should be well versed with all the product details and have a good knowledge of the company you are promoting.

Fake Modeling Agencies

Minimalism is key when you dress for any open calls or appointments. Agents want to see you, so leave the fashion statements at home. Dress simply in solid colored clothing. Avoid any stilettos or high-heeled shoes. Your makeup should also be simple and natural.

We can never stress it enough… be on time! If you have an appointment, show up a few minutes early. If you are attending an open call, do not show up 15 minutes before the end of the open call. You should never arrive later than one hour prior to the end.

10 Mistakes People Make When Contacting A Modeling Agency

1. Mistake: Providing outdated and/or misleading photos.

Correction: It’s important to update your photos as you change your look. You never want to mislead an agent by providing photos that don’t resemble your current look.
